Welcome from the Director

Welcome to the homepage for the Master of Business Administration program at Old Dominion University.  Our AACSB accredited program is taught by outstanding faculty, many are leaders in their field of study.

To meet the needs of working professionals, classes are offered in the evenings, late afternoons and Saturdays.  Some courses are offered during the day accommodating those who want to attend on a full-time basis.  Additionally, several classes in the program are offered at four different locations - Main Campus in Norfolk, the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center, the Peninsula Higher Education Center, and the Tri-Cities Higher Education Center in Portsmouth.

We are very proud of our recent ranking as a Top 15 Global Management Program by Entrepreneur Magazine and the Princeton Review which illustrates our program's ongoing commitment to prepare our students to be effective managers in an increasingly global business environment.  This commitment to global education is reflected in our diverse student body as well with approximately 10% of our students hailing from approximately 30 foreign countries.

Our curriculum provides both structure and flexibility for the student.  Nine core courses provide a solid foundation in business theory and decision making skills, preparing students to take electives from a variety of disciplines.  Students may choose to individually select electives to meet specific professional needs or choose electives within our concentrations.  Concentrations are available in Port and Maritime Management, International Business, Information Technology, Financial Analysis and Valuation, Public Administration and Business and Economic Forecasting.  Finally, the curriculum features a set of one-hour module classes often taught by local business professionals bringing the dynamic world of business into the classroom.  Recent module offerings include: business plan development, six sigma, creative thinking, business ethics, communicating with stakeholders and business valuation.

Networking is vital for successful business leaders.   ODU offers a number of ways for students to hone this skill by interacting with each other as well as the business community.  For example, the College of Business and Public Administration hosts the Economics Club of Hampton Roads that produces a monthly speaker series which students are always invited to attend.  Also, the program has its own student club, the MBA Association which hosts monthly speakers, socials, as well as an annual dinner. Guest speakers at the dinners have included: Macon Brock, Jr., founder, Dollar Tree Stores; Bruce Bradley, former President of Landmark Communications; and Les Cappetta, CEO of SSP America.

I wish you luck in your search for a MBA program.  Should you have any questions about our program, please do not hesitate to contact me at MBAInfo@odu.edu.

Sincerely,

Dr. Larry Filer
