Constant Hall NewsNovember, 2009Message From the DeanDr. Nancy BagranoffGreetings from Constant Hall. As always, the Fall semester is flying by. At least this year we have avoided a shock to the system like the economic collapse we experienced last year. We are busy as usual. In this issue of our electronic newsletter, you’ll read about many activities of students, faculty, and staff. One of the particularly fun events this year was a reunion of the graduates from our doctoral program in business administration. It’s great fun to teach students at all levels but faculty get particular joy from educating others for their own chosen career. The students returned this year as seasoned faculty and, in some cases, faculty administrators. All were delighted to return and astonished at the changes that have occurred since their graduation. There is plenty of other news in this newsletter but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention another activity at ODU outside the college. FOOTBALL! Everyone has been thrilled this semester with the return of football to Old Dominion University and the college is not immune from gridiron fever. It has been a wonderful opportunity for us to connect with many of our alumni who haven’t been on campus in awhile. It has also been fun to see the ODU spirit engendered by the game. If you haven’t attended a game, I encourage you to take advantage next year! Until next time - Aim High and Go Monarchs!

Dr. Ireland added that these reviews involve an average of 15-20 hours per month reviewing and improving “complex imperical research submitted by some of the world’s most highly published and respected scholars. Membership on the AMJ Editorial Review Board is restricted to individuals who are widely recognized as accomplished researchers on the leading edge of both their discipline and the advances in imperical research. In the seminar, Dr. Haines elaborated on four elements that reviewers focus on then criticizing experimental research. These factors include significant results, valid procedures, nominally valid measures, and generalizable subjects and task. For each factor, Dr. Haines discussed common mistakes novice researchers make and how he has, or plans to, overcome those issues in his own research. Since receiving his PhD from the University of Houston in 2002, Dr. Haines has focused almost exclusively on experimental research. His experiments have examined the process of group development in virtual teams, the process of ethical decision making, the impact of anonymous group discussions on ethical decision making, the effect of information availability on supply chain decision making, and the effect of workplace awareness on group decision making and performance. His current research interest in centered on the effects of other-awareness on individual perceptions and behavior. CBPA Faculty Cited for Service to Great Computer Challenge Five CBPA faculty members were cited recently for their service to the Great Computer Challenge, co-sponsored by Old Dominion University, WHRO, and the Consortium for Interactive Instruction. Dr. Samuel Coppage was both a Judge Coordinator and judge for the Java/Visual programming category of the Senior Division. Dr.Vijay Kalburgi, Dr. Lan Cao, Professor Emeritus William Crouch, and Ms. Renee Weather all served as judges for the Java/Visual Basic programming category of the Senior Division. The goal of the Great Computer Challenge, held annually for the past 24 years, is to promote in young people an inerest in the various aspects of computing and technology and to provide schools an opportunity to compare their technology programs with other schools in the region. The Challenge includes two competitions – a senior division for grades 6-12 and a junior division for grades K-5. The role of the judges includes both the development of the problems and judging criteria and evaluation of the finished projects. Problems must be appropriate for each age group and cannot be repeated from recent years because many schools use past problems for teaching. Problems must also be designed to they can be completed in the allotted time. At the conclusion of the event, judges evaluate and rank each entry in their category and award prizes. According to this year project organizer J. Douglas Streit, OCCS, one of the greatest aspects of the program is that student know they are being judged by experts and professionals who generously donate their time. Among the new services are a student internship program, coordinated by Associate Professor Mohammad Alkadry, to help students meet the internship requirement for pre-service students. In September, the Department, in conjunction with the ODU Career Management Center and the MPA Association, held a career workshop with a focus on networking. The Department also released its 2009-2010 career guide for MPA students. The guide has about 100 post-graduation fellowships and in-school internships. It also provides information about online search pages and job sites. The Career Guide and the Internship Guidelines are posted on the USPA website (Career/Internships link). E. V. Williams Center for Real Estate and Economic Development The E.V. Williams Center for Real Estate and Economic Development (CREED), with the support of it's advisory board, Industry Professional Advisors to the Center (IPAC), will sponsor several programs during the 2009 - 2010 academic year to link the CBPA real estate student community with the real estate and development industry here in Hampton Roads.
