Cluster Guide for Summer/Fall 2003
What are clusters?Three courses in a focus area at the upper-level (300+).There are eleven “clusters” or focus areas available.Normally, the cluster requires two courses outside of your normal business curriculum. The check-off spaces for these two courses are listed under “Upper-level General Education-Clusters” in your major curriculum sheet.
Does everyone have to take a cluster? No, there are two other options:
1.Take a “non-business” minor. Most business majors who choose a non-business minor choose economics, which requires 3 courses in addition to ECON 301.(Note: ECON 304 does not count towards the minor.)Economics is regarded as non-business for this purpose.Other minors, which must be completely outside of business, require 4 or 5 courses. You can certainly minor in a business area regardless of your clusters—it just doesn’t count for cluster purposes.
2.Take the international certificate program. This option, which involves an international area concentration, is an excellent choice for international business majors.
Do most people take clusters?Yes.Most students take the cluster option because it requires the fewest number of hours. There are scheduling problems and specific rules for clusters.
What are the main rules for completing a cluster? You choose courses from the list of the particular cluster you have selected. Here are the rules for choosing courses.
1.You may not mix and match courses from different clusters.
2.Only one of the three courses can be used in twice on your curriculum sheet. There are only three clusters that give you that opportunity. These three clusters (Global Culture, Admin Leadership, and Technology) allow you to take only two additional courses. These 3 clusters are described on the back in more detail.
3.A limited amount of substitution is on an emergency basis.
4.The cluster course list has expanded recently.Listed here are the three clusters most applicable to the business major. You need to consider the scheduling and availability of classes.
REMEMBER!!! you may only use one of the classes twice on your curriculum sheet!!!

(11/12/02) Cluster Guide for Spring 2003
What are clusters? Three courses in a focus area at the upper-level (300+). There are 11 “clusters” or focus areas available. Normally, the cluster requires two courses outside of your normal business curriculum. The check-off spaces for these two courses are listed under “Upper-level General Education-Clusters” in your major curriculum sheet.
Does everyone have to take a cluster? No, there are two other options:
1. Take a “non-business” minor. Most business majors who choose a non-business minor choose economics, which requires 3 courses in addition to ECON 301. (Note: ECON 304 does not count towards the minor.) Economics is regarded as non-business for this purpose. Other minors, which must be completely outside of business, require 4 or 5 courses. You can certainly minor in a business area regardless of your clusters—it just doesn’t count for cluster purposes.
2.Take the international certificate program. This option, which involves an international area concentration, is an excellent choice for international business majors.
Do most people take clusters? Yes. Most students take the cluster option because it requires the fewest number of hours. There are scheduling problems and specific rules for clusters.
What are the main rules for completing a cluster? You choose courses from the list of the particular cluster you have selected. Here are the rules for choosing courses.
1.One of the three cluster courses must be a WI (writing intensive course). The WI courses are clearly marked. In some cases, you could take two out of your three as WI courses, but most students do not make that choice.
2.You may not mix and match courses from different clusters.
3.Only one of the three courses can be used in twice on your curriculum sheet. There are only three clusters that give you that opportunity. These three clusters (Global Culture, Admin Leadership, and Technology) allow you to take only two additional courses. These 3 clusters are described on the back in more detail.
4.A limited amount of substitution is on an emergency basis.
5.The cluster course list has expanded recently. Listed here are the three clusters most applicable to the business major. You need to consider the scheduling and availability of classes. The WI classes are frequently the most difficult to schedule, so consider that choice very carefully.
